It’s April and here comes the rain. Flowers are blooming. Trees are turning green. And your basement is starting to get wet. The onset of Spring is the best time to reach out to the basement waterproofing and foundation repair experts at Best Buy Waterproofing for a Free Inspection. One of the major causes of a wet basement following a rain is a crack in your home’s foundation. Even a tiny crack in the foundation can lead to a serious problem. Catching foundation cracks early and repairing them properly can prevent costly repairs down the road.
There are three basic causes of foundation cracks in your basement:
- Shrinkage: Most of today’s home foundations are poured concrete. Much better than the old cinder block walls but susceptible to shrinking and cracking as the concrete cures and hardens. Most concrete cracks don’t cause structural issues with your foundation. However, they need to be repaired and sealed properly to prevent issues down the road.
- Settling: Your basement floor is a concrete slab, and it sets directly on the ground. As the ground beneath the slab gets wet, your basement floor can settle and shift, creating the potential for leaks. Inspecting the condition of your basement floor is an important part of our inspection.
- Changes in the Weather: As temperatures rise and fall, concrete expands and contracts which can cause cracks in the walls and on the floor. This problem is more significant in the colder months as the ground underneath your foundation expands and contracts.
